The trick with sponsored link programs is to find the keywords that have a lot of searches, but low sponsor demand. For example, ‘Internet marketing’ is a popular search term and there’s fierce competition that comes with that, but a lot of that traffic isn’t from people who want a website designer, it’s from people who want to learn website design.
On the other hand, ‘Internet marketing company’ comes with far less competition, even though people who are looking for a website are perhaps more likely to search for that phrase.
For the advertiser with a limited budget, or even one that doesn’t want to throw his money away on non-productive search terms, it helps to be working with a search engine consultant who knows his way around the sponsored link system.
